Tablet PC?

Posted by Cheddar79 - January 6th, 2008

So Johnny Utah recently posted about his Wacom Cintiq 12WX that he recently purchased and I was wondering...would it be a good idea to purchase a tablet pc instead? They are a cheaper option and you also have the benefit of portability with a laptop.

I know a few companies that are selling some for a reasonable price just wondered if anyone had any thoughts?

HP's Tablet PC

Fujitsu's Tablet PC
Toshiba's Tablet PC

Tablet PC?

I am about sure these tablet pcs dont have the same quality as wacom tablets : precision and pression detection (1000 levels i think). Its like drawing on a gameboy DS... it sucks.

I think the smartest thing would be is look for reviews , customer reviews, or a forum on a certain tablet pc that captures your interest. You will more likely find your answers you need their than here.

I'm in love.

Along the lines of what Loussi said, the Tablet PC's don't really have a Z-axis. It's basically a toggle of pen on and pen off for most of them.

i believe zekey uses a tablet PC...he sounds happy with it, but you should ask him.

They probably have a little lag when drawing too fast and the sensitivity might be pretty low. But there might be a good tablet pc out there. I just figure wacom's the best choice cause they stick to what they do best. The laptop makers add tablet functions, but it's not their forte. Good for portability though.

it's true that you won't get the same quality as a wacom cintiq, but yet most tablet pc are "Wacom powered" so I guess you'll get some quality

My tablet PC which I only recently obtained is great.

And it's ancient. Refurbished toshiba.

I'm sure one of the newer ones like the TecraM7 or such would be fantastic.

And the screen is not like a DS screen. It's like a hard piece of plastic, and it is accurate. Louissi must have used one of the poopy tiny tablet PC's you can find lying about in Circuit City these days.
Mine is pressure sensitive, but its not REALLY sensitive like a wacom or cintiq is. But I'm ok with that.

Yeah it sounds like they've come along way from their previous incarnations.

My DS is pretty accurate. My old one isn't tho :(

I don't have that wacom thingy, but I heard it's sensitive

Well i guess it depends on what you are looking for. It would be a nice alternative if you want to be able to draw everywhere. With that you can animate anywhere, so its cool.

you'll be missing out on possibly having dual monitors, shortcut keys, pen tilt and pressure sensitivity. but it's still a huge step up from a mouse
